This is our seventh summer in Madison. It’s hard to believe but when I think back on our early years—the pandemic, elementary school, not knowing where to find the best bread in town or where to go for a celebratory dinner—it seems like a lifetime ago.
Along the way, we have consistently pinched ourselves about where we landed. Our house and yard, our town, this little pocket of the world. It’s so beautiful and peaceful. Pink and lilac sunsets over the Sound, herons and ospreys swooping down the river behind us, even that mighty phragmite (an invasive species!) dancing in the wind is mesmerizing.
After literal years of looking around us and admiring the natural beauty of the area, talking about it with friends, half-joking about making a brand called The Sound Life, we did it!
We created a brand called The Sound Life.
We are starting humble, with limited edition sweatshirts, t-shirts, baseball hats and stickers. Small signatures that show a lot of pride. We’re hoping that others dig it as much as we do. That the heron, a cool bird and gentle reminder to look up, stay present and see the whole, is something people want to wear.
People ask: What is The Sound Life? We haven’t landed on any one definition or a ‘tagline’ yet. But to us, it’s:
Dusting off the kayaks in May
The ospreys’ screeching their return from down South
It’s roadside corn season
Scampering along the prehistoric boulders at Hammonasett
Sharing a bottle of cheap rosé from the packy at sundown
Outdoor concerts on the grassy strip, the green, the Salt Meadow bandstand
Hiking the Trolley Trail and East River Preserve
It’s biking to the beach
Watching the moon rise over Tuxis Island
It’s the everyday beauty and peaceful energy of living on the Long Island Sound.
